ARA Automotive (Lux) Study Q3 2026. Brand Intelligence for the luxury automotive category, using the four frontier AI models as the shopper.

319 choices / 4 models x 15 buyer questions / audited brands in colour, every other brand in a stepped grey.

Ask a machine which luxury car to buy and it will name thirty different brands.

In the third quarter of 2026 — the first ARA reading of this category, so there is no prior quarter to measure against — we put fifteen buyer questions to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity: the most iconic luxury brand, which holds its value best, which luxury car bar has the most loyal owners, what a first-time luxury buyer should choose. Every brand named in every answer was recorded, and where it ranked. Three hundred and nineteen choices in all.

The fifteen brands we audit hold 84.3% of it. That is the most concentrated shelf we have measured — tighter than women's deodorant, where three brands hold 39% between them, and well ahead of oral care, where eleven brands hold 41.6%. Luxury automotive is not a category where a machine has to reach far past the obvious names to answer a buying question.

The fifteen percent it does not hold is itself concentrated. Bentley alone takes 13 of the fifty choices outside our tracked set — more than a quarter of everything that falls outside the fifteen. Only five brands were named exactly once, and between them they hold 1.6% of the whole shelf. This is not a long tail settling into place, the way a newer or more contested category looks. It is a short list with a short list of runners-up.

One name outside our fifteen does more than sit in the tail. Lucid — not part of the audited cohort — was named seven times and took first place at least once, the same conversion the newest, least-established name on a shelf almost never gets. A new-money electric marque is already being placed ahead of audited incumbents on at least one question a buyer actually asks.

This is the baseline. The next reading is what tells us whether a shelf this concentrated stays that way, or whether luxury automotive starts looking more like the categories where the machines reach further down the list.
