ARA AI Shelf: Beverages Q3 2026
ARA Beverages Study — Q3 2026. Brand Intelligence for the beverage category, using the four frontier AI models as the consumer.
Coca-Cola is one of the most recognised brands on earth. Ask the four frontier AI models what to drink — the best sports drink, the coolest soda, the water brand everyone is talking about — and Coca-Cola is named in six per cent of the answers. That is the largest single holding on the entire shelf.
In the third quarter of 2026 we put the drinker questions to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity — the best sports drink, the healthiest soda, what to pair with pizza, the safest brand for a teenager — then recorded every brand they named and where it ranked.
A hundred and twenty-six brands came back. Half of them were named exactly once. No brand holds more than six per cent, the twelve brands we audited hold a quarter of the shelf between them, and seventeen of the sixty recommendation moments produced no audited brand at all.
Put that next to fast food, measured with the same method, and the contrast is the finding. In QSR, forty-two brands are named, every recommendation moment is claimed, and two brands hold nearly a third of the category. In beverages the shelf is three times as wide and nobody owns it. Same machines, same quarter, opposite conditions.
That difference decides what a brand's money should buy. On a settled shelf, presence has to be taken from an incumbent the models already trust. On an open one it can still be claimed — the ground is there, and it is cheap while it lasts. Beverages is the second kind, and the brands with the most to gain are the ones currently holding almost none of it.
Among the audited brands, Prime was named once. Poppi twice. Sprite three times. These are not small businesses or unknown names — they are brands with real distribution and, in two of the three cases, enormous cultural volume. None of it is reaching the machines.
