ARA Women's Deodorant Study — Q3 2026. Brand Intelligence for the women's deodorant category, using the four frontier AI models as the shopper.

340 placements · 4 models × 15 shopper questions · audited brands in colour, every other brand in a stepped grey · naming variants merged before counting.

Ask a machine which deodorant to buy and it answers with names. In most categories we have measured, that list is a scatter — dozens of brands, no leader, nobody named twice. Deodorant is the opposite. It is one of the tightest shelves we have charted.

In the third quarter of 2026 we put the shopper questions to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity — the best women's deodorant, what actually works all day, what a mother would recommend to her daughter — then recorded every brand they named and where it ranked.

Fifty-two brands are named in total — a small field, next to the 97 beauty produced and the 187 in travel. Native takes 13.8% of the shelf, Dove 13.2%, Secret 12.4% — three brands holding 39% of the category between them, and the eight audited brands holding 54.4% in total. For comparison: in travel, no brand anywhere on the shelf reaches 4%.

A shelf this concentrated is a displacement problem, not an absence problem. The machines have already settled on an answer here, and they repeat it. A challenger in this category is not claiming empty ground — it is taking ground from a brand the models already trust, which is the harder and more expensive of the two fights.

Billie was never named by any model, on any question. Ban was named once, in fourth place, by a single model. Both are real businesses with shelf space, distribution and customers. Neither exists in the answer — and on a shelf where five brands hold more than half of it, that absence is not a rounding error.

The largest brand on this shelf that we did not audit is Degree, at 7.1%, followed by Schmidt's at 6.8%. Both outrank four of the brands we did.
