ARA AI Shelf: Beauty + Skincare Q3 2026
ARA Beauty & Skincare Study — Q3 2026. Brand Intelligence for the beauty and skincare sector, using the four frontier AI models as the shopper.
Ask a machine which moisturiser to buy for sensitive skin, or which brand dermatologists actually recommend, and it answers with names. In most categories we have measured, that list is a scatter with no leader. Beauty is not one of those categories.
In the third quarter of 2026 we put the shopper questions to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity — the best moisturiser for sensitive skin, the brand dermatologists recommend, what's worth the money — then recorded every brand they named and where it ranked.
This shelf has a top, and it is held by the brands we audited. La Roche-Posay takes 8.2% of it, CeraVe 7.5%, The Ordinary 5.9% — three brands holding more than a fifth of the category between them. The fifteen audited brands hold 39.9% in total. For comparison: in travel, no brand anywhere on the shelf reaches 4%.
That difference matters more than the ranking does. A category with clear AI incumbents is a displacement problem, not an absence problem — a challenger there is not claiming empty ground, it is taking ground from a brand the machines already trust. Beauty has consolidated. Most categories have not, yet.
Two of the fifteen brands we audited were never named by any model, on any of the questions: Clarins and Dermalogica. Both are substantial businesses with decades of category presence. Neither exists in the answer.
