ARA AI Shelf: Luxury Fashion Q2 2026
ARA Luxury Fashion Study — Q2 2026. Brand Intelligence for the luxury fashion category, using the four frontier AI models as the buyer.
Luxury is the category that has spent the most money, for the longest time, on being unmistakable. Ask the four frontier AI models which house holds its value, which does quiet luxury best, which is influencing culture right now — and three of the fifteen houses we audited do not come up at all.
In the second quarter of 2026 we put the buyer questions to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity — which brand to buy as an investment piece, which takes atelier craft most seriously, which dominates the red carpet, which owns the single most recognisable signature piece — then recorded every brand they named and where it ranked.
Fifty-five brands came back across 247 placements. The audited houses hold 63.2% of the shelf, which sounds like control until you see how it is distributed: Chanel and Louis Vuitton hold 10.9% each, Hermès 8.9%, Dior 8.1%, Gucci 7.7%. Five houses carry almost half the category. The other ten split what is left.
Tom Ford, Moncler and Ralph Lauren were never named by any model, on any question. Not once in 52 recommendation moments. Ralph Lauren alone is a multi-billion-dollar business with near-universal name recognition, and on the shelf the machines are building it does not exist. That is the widest gap between real-world stature and AI presence we have measured in any category.
The house doing best on this shelf is one we did not audit. Loewe holds 4.5% — more than Bottega Veneta, more than Balenciaga, more than Prada, and more than ten of the fifteen houses in the cohort. A brand with a fraction of the marketing budget is being handed to buyers more often than houses many times its size.
Luxury has always been a category where perception is the product. What this shows is that perception now has a second audience — one that does not attend shows, does not read the campaign, and forms its view from what it can read. Three of these houses are invisible to it, and none of them will find that out from a brand-tracking study.
